Championship Show 2022 Judges Critique

SWGDC CH Show 29/05/2022 Judges Critique

    Judge;  Carol Gray (Calomar)

I would like to thank the committee of the SWGDC for voting for me to give my first ticket appointment, though this was delayed a year due to Covid. I would also like to thank the exhibitors who entered and gave me the opportunity to go over their dogs and accepted my decisions. I thoroughly enjoyed my day and was pleased with my principal winners. I was delighted to see there are some promising puppies making their debuts this year as the future of our lovely breed depends on them. My only criticism would be in the Harlequins, which, apart from a couple of exhibits, did not have the required ‘white background with torn patches’ as stated in the breed standard, but were instead just heavily ‘flecked’. Something we must be aware of in future breeding programmes of this colour !

Minor Puppy Dog 6 (1 abs)

1st  Pococks Tamzdane Empower Mint

Ultra smart 6mnth old Mantle boy who is classically marked and one so confident and who thoroughly enjoyed his day out. Very well constructed with bags of substance. Yes he is short coupled and could probably do with a tad more length of loin but he is very much a baby. Correct head planes and length of foreface. Good length of neck into correct lay of shoulder. Good breadth and depth of chest. Level topline with correct croup and hind angulation. His movement is true with an extended side gait and he has that lovely ‘bounce’ so typical of this successful kennel. I loved him and he should have a bright future ahead of him. BPD & BPIS

2nd  Lewis’s Rimor  Bachet Noir Avec Axeford

6mnths Brindle baby making his debut here today. Lovely stripey boy who is well put together with good bone and substance. He has a lovely head with correct planes and length of foreface. Good reach of neck, correct lay of shoulder into a level topline. Good croup and hind angulation.  He was a bit overawed by his surroundings which told when he was being moved but he is another baby with a bright future.

3rd  Morgan’s Rimor Beaumaris

Puppy Dog 4 (1 abs)

1st  Webb & Morgan Evans Vanmore My Kind of Guy At Castleon

10mnths old Fawn Dog. Well grown boy with bags of substance, very typical of this kennel. Correct head planes with lovely dark mask. Good length of neck into correct lay of shoulder, well filled straight front and good tight feet, level topline into correct croup and hind angulation. Moved well

2nd  Price’s Devorin Washington Via Leamap

10mnths old black boy who is growing on well but still has that immature look that tells you he is still very much a baby. Lovely head with level planes and good reach of foreface. Good length of neck. Slightly bum high at the moment but he’s at the age where growth spurts frequently alter the outline. Moved well.

3rd Kingsley’s Nevilldown Legacy For Dainoak

Junior Dog 5 (2 abs)

1st Jacques & Kirby’s  Jacqukir No Regrets JW

16mnths Fawn dog. Tall upstanding boy who has had a very successful career to date and when you go over him you can see why. He is so well put together with everything in the right place, good length of neck, lay of shoulder, correct topline, croup and rear angulation. lovely head and he has that lovely quizzical expression when he looks at you. He moves really well and was one I seriously considered for the RCC, he just needs to mature on now and I’m sure he will continue to challenge the more senior males as he does.

2nd MacGowans Kinnegans I Walk The Line At Penmarlam

16mnths old Fawn dog, smaller in stature than 1st but correctly put together. Good head planes, well filled front, level topline and correct hind angulation. Moved ok but wasn’t at his best as he had been stung on his eye the night before and was obviously affected by this.

3rd  Dunn’s Allours Bonito

Yearling Dog – No Entries

Novice Dog (2)

1st Kingsley’s Nevilldown Legacy For Dainoak

9mnths old Harlequin boy, compact and well put together. My preference would be for slightly more length of foreface, but he has time on his side for this to develop. He has a good straight front with well filled chest. Correct topline, croup and hind angulation. Moved well.

2nd  Nunn’s Roshanun Volare

Harlequin boy just 2yrs old. Heavily marked and obviously going through a growth spurt as he looks quite rangy at the moment and needs to fill his large frame. Better length of foreface than 1st. Moved ok

Post Graduate Dog  - No Entries

Limit Dog (1)

1st Fendanesylcrest American Outlaw At Sunlind (AI) (Imp USA)

4yr old Fawn dog. Stood alone but a worthy winner. He’s huge but has ample substance to fill his frame. Super well filled front. Good masculine head with level planes, good reach of neck into strong shoulders, level topline and excellent croup and tailset. Correct hind angulation. Moves well with good side extension.

Veteran Dog – No Entries

Open Fawn Dog – No Entries

Open Brindle Dog – (1) Absent

Open Blue Dog (1)

1st Mackenzies Carsan Vincent

Lovely steel blue dog, almost 4yrs old and has lots of substance. Correct head planes with good length of foreface. My notes say ‘lovely tight feet’. Good reach of neck into correct lay of shoulder, well filled front with good depth and breadth of chest. Correct topline, croup and tailset. Good hind angulation. Moves well

Open Black Dog (3, 1 abs)

1st Simpson’s Renescent Caught In A Spell

Two and a half year old Black dog of good size and substance and is maturing nicely. Lovely head with correct planes and length of foreface. Good reach of neck, correct lay of shoulder. Well filled straight front with depth of chest. Good topline, croup and tailset. Correct hind angulation. Moved with drive. Should have a bright future.

2nd Dunn’s Allours Bonito

14mnths old black dog who was 3rd in Junior. I think he’s going through that typical male adolescent stage as he looks quite rangy at the moment. He has a big frame to fill but has time on his side. For me personally, he has too much white on him and he is broad in backskull with too much drop of lip which is typical of the European bloodlines. Movement was ok

Open Harlequin Dog (2, 1 abs)

1st Pococks Nordic Giants Leopold At Tamzdane

2yr old well marked Harlequin dog of good size and substance. His head is correct with a good length of foreface. Lovely clean well filled front. Sufficient reach of neck into a good lay of shoulder. Correct depth of chest, good topline, croup and tailset. Correct hind angulation. One of the best movers on the day, excellent side gait with extension and drive so typical of this kennel.

Open Mantle Dog (1) Absent

Open Dog (5,1 abs)

1st Mosvold’s Geordieone Torpa Stenhus

4yr old Fawn dog that I only really saw for the first time at a show earlier this year and I can remember thinking what a smart looking dog he was. He’s not the biggest male but you can see instantly that he is definitely male and so well put together. He has that classic Dane outline that new people coming into the breed should study. Viewing him from all angles he is correct. Lovely head with correct planes and length of foreface. Good reach of neck into correct lay of shoulder. Straight front with good depth of chest. He holds his topline well and has a correct croup, tailset and hind angulation. His movement is straight and true. I was pleased to award him the CC and BOB and delighted to learn that this made him up on the day. Congratulations

2nd Chappells CH Selmalda Jealous Guy (AI)

Smart looking dark Brindle boy of just 2yrs and one typical of this successful kennel having had a very successful show career to date gaining his crown at a fairly young age. He is maturing well and as he fills his frame more and gains more substance he will look even better. He has a lovely head with correct planes and length of foreface, good reach of neck into correct lay of shoulder. Very good topline and correct length of loin. Slightly rounded croup but his tailset is good. Hind angulation is correct and he moved well. Pleased to award him the RCC

Minor Puppy Bitch (4, 2abs)

1st Morgan’s Rimor Boadixya

Very pretty Brindle baby just 6mnths old and litter sister to my 2nd in Puppy Dog. Lovely feminine head with long reach of neck. Good shoulder placement and straight front. Level topline with a good croup and correct hind angulation. Moved well for such a baby.

2nd Mackenzies Carsan Luciana

Another pretty 6mnth old baby at her first show but this time a blue. Well put together with a good head, compact with correct angulation for her age. She was slightly overawed by her surroundings which unfortunately let her down on the move making it hard to assess her. She just needs time and patience.

Puppy Bitch (3, 1 abs)

1st Collett’s Foaldown Dark Secret

10mnths old black bitch. Very tall for her age but so feminine. Correct head planes with lovely tight eyes. Excellent reach of neck into correct shoulders. Good straight front. Level topline and correct croup and hind angulation. Moves really well. She has lots of time on her side to mature nicely and fill that lovely frame. I’m sure she will have a bright future.

2nd Lewis & Youngs Axeford Alsephina

9mnths old pale Fawn bitch out at her very first show. Very pretty girl with a lovely dark mask, very good bone and substance. Head developing well with good reach of neck flowing into strong shoulders. Lovely straight front. Level topline with correct croup and hind angulation. Another who was a bit overawed with her surroundings and this showed in her initial hesitation to move, but once she settled, she moves straight and true.

Junior Bitch (7,2 abs)

1st Clark’s Garsak Summer Days at Mintrex

Lovely Fawn bitch just 12 months old and one who is already stamping her presence in the breed. She is so typical of this successful kennel, feminine with an excellent ring presence and everything in the right place. Lovely feminine head with correct planes and length of foreface. Good reach of neck into correct lay of shoulder, straight, well filled front. Good topline with correct croup and tailset. Front and hind angulation side on are as required. Moved really well to win this class easily so I was disappointed when she didn’t repeat this in the challenge. A champion in the making and one I shall watch with interest !

2nd Morgans Rimor Athenas Kyss

Another pretty brindle bitch just 13 months old and developing well. Very feminine with a lovely correct head. Long reach of neck, correct shoulder placement, straight front, good topline with correct croup, tailset and hind angulation. She is filling out nicely and moved well once she got going

3rd Simpson’s Renescent Cream of The Crop

Yearling Bitch (2)

1st Morgan Evans Vanmore Magic Spell

21 mnths old Fawn Bitch, well proportioned with lots of substance. Correct head planes with a lovely dark mask. She has a good reach of neck flowing into correct withers and lay of shoulder and a level topline. Good depth to chest both from the front and side view. Good croup and tail set, moved well.

2nd Kingsley’s Dainoak Forever in Blu Genes

19mnths old blue bitch. Smaller in height than (1). Correct head planes though I would like to see a tad more length to foreface. Good length of neck into correct lay of shoulder. Well filled front. Correct topline, croup and hind angulation. Moved ok.

Novice Bitch (2)

1st Middleton’s Carsan Augustina

Lovely6mnths old blue baby out at her first show and she took everything in her stride. She is so well put together, lovely head and reach of neck, a little bum high in her topline at the moment but I wouldn’t expect any different at her age. Lovely straight front with correct depth of chest. Very good croup and tailset. Moved really confident and won this class easily. Proud to award her BPB

2nd Bielecka’s Alegriagiant Per Quelle

Harlequin bitch approaching her 3rd birthday. She has good head planes and a good clean front. Good reach of neck. Just unfortunate that her topline lets her down with her sloping croup. Moved ok

Post Graduate Bitch (4, 1 abs)

1st Colletts Foaldown A Real Diamond

26mnths Fawn bitch of good size and substance with everything in the right proportions. I remember thinking just how much she has come on since I last saw her about 9 months ago. Today she stood beautifully. She has a lovely classical head with correct length of foreface, a well filled front. Good reach of neck and correct topline and tailset. Moved really well today.

2nd Middleton’s Dornoir Sinead

Lovely blue bitch just had her 2nd birthday. My notes say so feminine ! she is of good size with correct head planes and length of foreface. Good length of neck into correct lay of shoulder. Correct depth of chest when viewed from both front and side angles. She has a good topline, croup set and hind angulation. I would like to see her with slightly more spring of rib but I’m sure this will come as she matures on. Slightly unsettled on the move first of all but once she did settle she moved with drive.

3rd Joaquin’s Droolakiss Pretty In Pink

Limit Bitch (4, 1 abs)

1st Armour & Hookers Thistledane Game Changer

17mnths Fawn Bitch. This partnership continue to produce top winning dogs and this bitch was no exception. I loved her as a minor puppy and I’m happy to see she is maturing well. She’s a big, tall girl for her age, which I know is not to everyone’s liking, but she has the substance to carry it off and once she has concluded her show career I’m sure she will make an excellent brood bitch. Typical Dane head, level planes with excellent length of foreface and dark mask that I so love. She has a good reach of neck into strong well placed shoulders. Straight front with good depth of chest. Level topline with excellent croup, correct tailset and hind angulation. She moves straight with drive and very good side extension. Pleased to award her the RCC and hopefully she will continue to be successful in the ring.

2nd Jacob’s Vanmore She’s All That At Kazabbie

2yr old pale fawn bitch, another who has had a successful show career to date. She is well put together with ample substance for her size. Lovely head planes, good reach of neck, strong withers and level topline. Correct croup and tailset and the right amount of hind angulation to present a well balanced outline. Moved well, just unfortunate to meet (1) on the day.

2nd Mackenzies Carsan Savanna

4yr old blue bitch and another who is so well put together. She has a correct head, length of neck, correct straight front. A little softer on topline than (1) and she has a slightly lower tailset which is why I gave her 2nd place today, but she moves very well.

1st Southgate’s Malbecio Rioja

17mnths old black bitch who was 4th in Junior. She has a lovely head with a good reach of neck into correct lay of shoulder. Very good topline with correct croup and tailset. 1st McClellands CH Jutlanders Bat Out Of Hell for Anadaine IMP DNK)

3yrs old pale Fawn bitch. I love her !! She is of good size with bags of substance and so correct in make and shape. Beautiful head with correct planes all through, correct reach of neck to strong withers and correct lay of shoulder. Straight front with lovely depth to chest from both front and side angles. Excellent topline with correct croup and tailset. Matching front and hind angulations complete a lovely picture of this beautiful bitch. Movement is steady and true both coming and going away. I was so pleased to award her the BCC, BOS & RBIS.

2nd  Teese’s CH Nikami Leap Of Faith For Teesedane

Another lovely fawn bitch just over 2 yrs of age and still has some maturing to do. She has a very pretty feminine head which exudes that quizzical dane expression so often missing in our breed today. Again, another with substance, slightly shorter coupled than (1). Correct straight front. Strong neck into a good lay of shoulder, level topline and correct croup and tailset. Another with correct angulations front and rear and she moves very well. Just unfortunate to be in very strong competition with some cracking bitches at the moment but she is challenging them every step of the way and she has age on her side! A worthy champion.
